A Dialogue Between Craft and Technology

Sebastian Herkner is one of Germany's most internationally recognised contemporary designers. His work brings together traditional craftsmanship, new technologies and a distinctive sensitivity for materials, colour and texture.
For Midgard, Herkner developed the LOJA lighting family, translating the principle of adjustable lighting into an interplay of light, material and intuitive movement.

About Sebastian Herkner

Born in 1981, Sebastian Herkner studied product design at the University of Art and Design Offenbach and founded his studio in 2006. His work spans furniture, lighting, objects and interiors for internationally recognised manufacturers.

An appreciation of traditional craftsmanship is central to his approach, combined with new technologies, authentic materials and an interest in different cultures and manufacturing traditions. Materials, textures and production processes become integral parts of the design itself.

His work has received numerous international awards, including Maison&Objet Designer of the Year in 2019 and the EDIDA Best International Designer award in 2021.

Designing for Midgard

LOJA is Sebastian Herkner's first lighting family for Midgard. The design explores a new expression of adjustable light. A gently curved paper shade rests on an illuminated hand-blown glass body and can be moved by hand, changing the balance between direct and indirect light with a simple gesture.

The movement transforms the shade into a functional part of the luminaire: its position changes both the direction of light and the sculptural presence of LOJA within the room.

The LOJA Lighting Family

LOJA comprises table, floor and pendant luminaires, combining sculptural presence with advanced lighting technology. Tunable White from 1800 K to 4000 K allows the light to shift from warm atmospheric illumination to brighter functional light. Integrated Matter technology connects LOJA with compatible smart home systems, while the Midgard LED Unit and transformer are designed for replacement and long-term maintenance.
The collection is constructed for circularity, with separable components and recyclable primary materials, reflecting Sebastian Herkner’s approach to contemporary design and Midgard’s focus on long product life.

Awards & Recognition

The collaboration between Sebastian Herkner and Midgard has received international recognition with both the Archiproducts Design Award and the Archiproducts Sustainability Award for LOJA.
The awards recognise the collection's combination of contemporary lighting design, material use, functionality and circular product development.

Further Collaborations

Beyond his work with Midgard, Sebastian Herkner collaborates with internationally recognised manufacturers including ClassiCon, Fritz Hansen, Thonet, Moroso, Duravit, Dedon and Rosenthal. His work spans furniture, lighting and interiors.
